As we reflect on another momentous year in the history of An Garda Síochána, following the centenary of the organisation last year, I am honoured to be able to, again, share the season’s best wishes with you and your families.
I was privileged this year to attend a special ceremony at Garda Headquarters, to rededicate the Garda Monument of Remembrance. When the monument was originally dedicated in 1966, there were 16 names inscribed on it. Sadly, more Members have joined that number in the intervening years. They are part of the 89 Members who have been killed in the line of duty, making the ultimate sacrifice in service to the State and the people of Ireland.
In renovating the memorial, it has been reimagined as a moving tribute to all of those who have died in service since the foundation of An Garda Síochána in 1922, and it now includes the names of over 1,800 Garda personnel, Garda members and Garda Staff, who have passed away while in service. I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of all those whose names are inscribed on the monument
At this time of year, when we celebrate with our loved ones, I want to wish every Retired Garda Member the very best for the coming year and to thank them for their service to our country.
Wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy Christmas and New Year,
Helen McEntee TD
Minister for Justice
