Unarmed Gardai – Luxury we can no longer afford.

The Irish Independent, features a well written article from retired Chief Superintendet Michael Carthy, a Roscommon GSRMA member. It reads: “The killing by gunfire of a second garda in less than three years in this region reinforces the views of respected journalist Jim Cusack, that a corridoor of lawlessness exists along the border involving former terrorists both republican and loyalist.  In this context, of high incidence of gun crime, perhaps consideration should be given by the authorities to revising policing methods including arming the gardai, particularly in some areas.”

Arming Gardai will not solve the problem, but enforcement of all laws in a sensible manner before matters get out of hand. There will always be a need for properly trained armed unit as described in the article to back up uniform members. There is no scarcity of law to deal with any offensive weapon but what is lacking is the will to enforce that law by demanding waterproof cases before commencing proceedings. Every file being prepared is less man hours for preventive patrolling. Evidence that a person had a firearm or imitation firearm, replica firearm by the prosecution should be sufficient for a conviction as the victim only sees a gun. Some years ago while looking at the roll of honour in New South Wales police, where their numbers are similar – the roll of honour is similar in number albeit armed.
