Centenary celebrations marking the founding of An Garda Síochána are just eight years away. Photographs of founding members of the force who opened Garda Barracks will be of historic value. Thanks to a Mrs. Betty Meade, who lives in Cobh, Co. Cork, Pat Lehane (Chairman Killarney GSRMA) is able to display a beautiful black & white photograph of a Sergeant and evelen Gardai who were stationed in Killarney on the 14th October 1924. This was the first station party in Killarney.
Behind the notice-board is Betty Meade’s father:- Garda Michael Dunne (Reg. No. 720), and the person to his left is:- Garda Stephen Lawlor, a native of Headfield, Borris, Co. Carlow. He later served in Miltown-Malbay, Kilrush, Sixmilesbridge and after promotion to SERGEANT transferred to Ballina, Co. Mayo. His son – Fr. Brendan Lawlor served on the Missions and now assisting the Parish Ministry in Tulla, Co. Clare.
The Killarney GSRMA Branch recently had this picture framed and presented to the Garda Station Party in Killarney. The Kerry Eye Newspaper Photographer was on hands to capture the occasion.
