Following the Local Election 2014 counts, we have updated records to show the names of at EIGHT (8) retired Gardai who were successful and elected to Co. Council seats throughout the country. Gerry Walsh, former Sergeant I/C., Greystones, got 632 (1st Preference) Votes and gained a Fianna Fáil Seat on Wicklow Co. Council. Brendan Thornhill, a former Community Garda in Bray Station, got 820 (1st Preference) Votes to take an Independent Co. Council Seat. This mean two retired Gardai taking seats in Wicklow Co. Council.
Down in Wexford, Retired Detective Garda Joe O’ Sullivan, was a Fianna Fáil candidate and he got 1326 (1st Preference Votes) and got elected to Wexford Co. Council. Joe is a native of Co. Offaly and was stationed in Gorey for many years.
Over in Galway Jim Cuddy, a GSRMA man was elected to Galway Co. Council after winning a seat in Athenry-Oranmore. Jim was elected on the 5th count with 1,473 votes. Jim, is a former member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Garda Representative Association and for many years he was Recording Secretary for St. Paul’s Garda Medical Aid Society. In Galway-West, Joe Folan, a retired Garda Sergeant won a seat. Jim is a native of Furbo in Galway, served in the DMA before returning to Galway-West and retired a few years ago from Oughterard.
In Mayo, Retired Detective Garda Christy Hyland, who served for many years at the foothills of Croagh Patrick in Westport was successful in winning a seat on Mayo Co. Council aftter getting 1,160 (1st Preference) Votes in Mayo West.
Up in Drogheda, Richie Culhane who is the Mayor of Drogeda and with the Fine Gael Colours was re-elected to Louth Co. Council. He received 1,032 votes and takes on of the ten seats on the council. Richie, served as a Garda in Drogheda for over 30 years ans since his retirement is a fully fledged GSRMA member.
In the European Culture City of Limerick, retired Detective Garda Seán Lynch won a seat after taking 519 (1st Preference Votes).
This is some achievement, a clear indication of solid trust and faith in retired members of the Garda Force in many areas.
