Killers of Garda Sergeant Patrick Morrissey – Released

A Garda Killer who dodged a death sentence was released from Prison yesterday despite pleas to keep him caged – reports the Irish Mirror.  Michael McHugh was driving to freedom from Portlaoise Prison after 30 years behind bars for the murder of Garda Sergeant Patrick Morrissey.  He was initially sentenced to death in 1985 but the State execution was commuted to 40 years in prison.  McHugh’s co-convicted Noel Callan also walked free from Castlerea Prison on Monday.

    I do believe my memory is not bad and my memory is that An Garda Siochana were assured when the Death Penalty was abolished it was to be replaced by a Sentence of not less than 40 years without remission as a deterrent.I can still clearly remember the hearth felt passioned plea by a member present at an occurance where a young man lost his life and assurances being given , Was it given because of the people present

    The release of state papers recently show the advice of the attorney general at the time was it was 40 years minimum without remission when the DEATH SENTENCE was replaced, and that was based on the advice of previous office holders
