We as retired Public Servants and retired members of An Garda Siochana know full well its hard to get by these days. Just think what us old pensioners are about trying to get our paltry pensions restored to an acceptable level, more often in the region of €30K p.a and here we have Judges unable to make ends meet with salaries in excess of €100k. Crumbs from the table, comes to mind !!!!!!!!!!
Judges have told the Government they are struggling to get by on six-figure salaries.
The Association of Judges says it is concerned at a delay in pay restoration for its members.
Salaries were cut by between 24% and 30% during the financial crisis, meaning a District Court judge now earns more than €111,000 instead of €123,000 before the cut.
According to the Irish Examiner, judges have written to the Government claiming they cannot afford to wait for pay to be restored.
In a letter to the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, AJI president George Birmingham wrote: “it is the case that there are members of the judiciary who are struggling to get by and can ill afford to wait”.
“Moreover, because the restoration will not take place on the due date and on the same date as all the other public servants that are benefitting there is a real risk that when the restoration eventually takes place that it will be misreported in the media as representing some sort of special increase for judges.”
