It is good to see GSRMA put this on the website, Sadly many people have no idea of the dedication shown by the Defence Forces Prison Service and Gardai over those years in their actions to prevent death and destruction of the fabric of a civilized society .Jim Cannons interview on Lifeline available on The Members Section leaves no one in any doubt of the evil of this young mans death and the ongoing suffering of families

It is most disappointing that the merits of this horrific incident, with its tragic consequences for the involved members, has not been formally honoured in a singular manner by the authorities.

The murder of Gda Clerkin was different from the several other murders of Gardai in the last 40 years. The Gardai and Defence forces were lured in to a situation where a booby trap had been laid in the form of a bomb. This was the targetting of memers of the security services unlike a situation which may have arisen following a bank robbery.
The Provisionals planted the explosive device in a location over a hundred miles from the border. This was not an attack on RUC or British Army but a deliberate attack on the Irish state.
