Garda discretion can build a link between communities and police.

John Canty, Mallow, Co. Cork put pen to paper and wrote a letter to the Irish Examiner last week on the above topic.  His letter was published on Wednesday, 24th September.  The Garda Síochána he states …….is on its knees and regularly we hear about abuses of power, penalty points being knocked-off and summonses disappearing.  John is worried ……the locals who benefited from Garda dioscretion will no longer trust their police force. This will result in renewed hatred for the gardai, with the public no longer willing to help them in matters more important than penalty points. He feels strongly that Garda discretion can build a link between communities and police.

IN TO DAYS IRISH INDEPENDENT THERE IS AN EDITORIAL UNDER THE HEADING LETS NOT FORGET WE DEPEND ON THE GARDAI. IT IS SHORT BUT TO THE POINT, PREVENTION OF CRIME AND OFFENCES SHOULD BE THE PRIORITY OF ANY POLICE FORCE FOLLOWED BY THE DETECTION OF CRIME AND OFFENCES FOR WHICH CONFIDENTIALLY WAS ALWAYS SACRED BUT SADLY NOW THE PRIORITY IS ALLEGED LOSS TO THE TAXPAYER WITHOUT ANY REGARD FOR THE VICTIMS OF HEINOUS CRIME.
