In June 2015, we appealed to Garda retired colleagues to see if anyone had the words of a Garda Prayer or a Policeman’s Prayer. Our sister organisation, The National Association Police Officers (NARPO) in the United Kingdom, kindly supplied the latter. However, the actual request that the GSRMA Gen. Secretary received was for the words of a —A Garda Prayer. We are very pleased that Dave (Rocky) O’ Brien, who joined the Garda Síochána Retired Members’ Association a few months ago, was able to respond to our request – to share the prayer that his mother gave to him 35 years ago. We thank Dave for sharing the prayer with the GSRMA Family.
A Garda Prayer
Almighty God grant me the skill and wisdom to make me always stronger in protecting the community from the evildoer.
Guide me in knowing when to enforce and when to relax the letter of the law.
Help me to be a personal example of the honesty, goodness and the justice which it is my duty to maintain, and grant that my actions will inspire in my community confidence in it’s Garda personnel.
I make this prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord.
My mother gave me this prayer 32 years ago when i joined an Garda Siochana, it contains a picture of St Paul of The Cross, Patron Saint of All Police. I carried the prayer everyday, in my warrant card through out my service and still to-day.
